Remembering Thanulinga Nadar
Thiru. Thanulinga Nadar was born on the 17th of February in 1915 in Potrayadi village in Kanyakumari district in the erstwhile Madras Presidency. He had a keen interest in Hinduism from a young age. He practiced Hinduism with great devotion. He joined the army after working in the police department for some time. He worked as an advocate in the district court for some time after graduating in law. Thus, he worked as a policeman, soldier, lawyer, and teacher.
In 1946, he became a member of the Thiru Tamizhar organization. In 1947, Thiru Tamizhar became one of the Five Movement groups. During MGR’s tenure as chief minister, an incident took place around the Mandaikadu riots. A riot broke out between Hindus and Christians in Kanyakumari district. No significant steps were taken to protect Hindus by M.G.R. Then Thanulinga Nadar spoke directly and clearly to MGR regarding this issue to protect the Hindus.
In 1951, Thanulinga Nadar was elected as the President of the Tamil Nadu Travancore Congress Party. In 1951, Kanyakumari district merged with Tamil Nadu. In 1957, he became a Member of Parliament from Nagercoil and in 1964, a Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha).
In 1971, Thanulinga Nadar left the Congress. In 1982, he took over as the president of the Hindu Munnani (‘Hindu Front’), and in 1987, he presided over the RSS Vijayadashami function in Nagpur. Along with Thiru Rama Gopalan continued to serve as the state president of the Hindu Munnani. Thiru. Thanulinga Nadar passed away while addressing the Dr. Hedgewar centenary gathering on the 2nd of November in 1988.
