EVM security under watch in Assam
The Election Commission of India has put in place strict security measures for electronic voting machines (EVMs) in Assam, with Chief Electoral Officer Anurag Goel assuring full transparency and monitoring.
Addressing concerns, Goel said candidates, election agents and authorised party representatives are allowed to visit strong room premises up to the CCTV monitoring zone.
“The contesting candidate, election agent or authorised representative has the right to visit the strong room area up to the CCTV coverage zone. We have issued strict instructions to ensure these rights are protected,” he said.
Controlled access, strict protocols
Goel clarified that only a limited number of authorised individuals are allowed inside the CCTV monitoring area at any given time.
“Only three to five people have visited at a time. No one is allowed near the strong room door without proper authorisation,” he said.
Responding to concerns from the Golaghat constituency, he said an inquiry found that the presence of five authorised persons within the CCTV zone was within permissible limits.
Multi-layered security in place
The CEO emphasised that strong rooms are secured under multi-layered arrangements, with central observers and security personnel deployed round the clock.
“Even officials cannot enter without registration and valid identity verification,” he said.
EVMs across Assam remain under continuous surveillance through both physical monitoring and CCTV coverage, with representatives of candidates keeping a close watch.
