Udupi Police bust espionage ring leaking naval secrets to Pakistan
In a major national security breach, Udupi Police in Karnataka have arrested two men for allegedly leaking classified information about Indian naval vessels to Pakistan. The accused, identified as Rohit (29) and Santri (37), hail from Sultanpur district in Uttar Pradesh.
According to police officials, the duo leaked sensitive information related to the Cochin Shipyard’s Malpe–Udupi unit, which operates under the Union Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. The revelations include critical details about Indian Navy ship movements and infrastructure.
Rohit, who worked as an insulator with subcontractor Shushma Marine Pvt. Ltd., had earlier been employed at Cochin Shipyard Limited in Kerala. Investigators allege that during his stint in Kerala, he illegally transmitted confidential information—including the number and details of Indian Navy ships—via WhatsApp, reportedly in exchange for financial benefits.
Even after his transfer to the Malpe unit, Rohit allegedly continued collecting restricted information with the help of a friend in Kochi. He is suspected to have forwarded these details to an unauthorised contact, thereby compromising national security and violating strict security protocols.
A complaint filed by the CEO of Udupi Cochin Shipyard, Malpe, led to the registration of a case at Malpe Police Station. Following their arrest, both accused have been remanded to judicial custody till December 3.
Further investigation is underway to determine the identity of the handlers involved and whether additional individuals are part of the suspected espionage network.
