Warning follows crackdown on student and H-1B visas

The United States Embassy in India on Wednesday issued a stern warning to international students, cautioning that violations of US laws could result in visa revocation, deportation, and future ineligibility for American visas.

In a post on X, the embassy said that breaking US laws or being arrested can have serious consequences for students studying in the country. Emphasising that a US visa is a privilege and not a right, it warned that even minor legal violations could jeopardise a student’s stay and future travel prospects.

“Breaking U.S. laws can have serious consequences for your student visa. If you are arrested or violate any laws, your visa may be revoked, you may be deported, and you could be ineligible for future U.S. visas,” the embassy said.

The warning comes amid a broader tightening of US immigration policies under the Donald Trump-led administration. Last week, the US Embassy had also cautioned applicants for H-1B and H-4 visas that violations of immigration laws could attract significant criminal penalties.

The stricter approach has coincided with a sharp decline in international student enrolments in the United States. New international enrolments fell by 17 per cent last year, with August 2024 data showing a 19 per cent year-on-year drop — the lowest level since 2021. The decline has been driven largely by fewer students arriving from India.

At the same time, H-1B visa applicants, who seek employment in the US as skilled workers, are facing unusually long waiting periods. Several visa appointments at US consulates in India have been cancelled or delayed by months following recent policy changes.

The embassy has also reiterated its warning against illegal immigration, describing it as a “fruitless journey”. In a separate post earlier this month, it said illegal migrants are often exploited by violent cartels, human traffickers, and corrupt officials.

“Illegal immigrants are exploited and victimised in what ultimately proves to be a fruitless journey. The only people who benefit from illegal immigration are traffickers,” the embassy said.

  1. Too many threatenings by USA on everything. Indians are fools to send their children for studies in USA. Time they stop & find different solutions to life
Time for the world to ignore USA & live without bothering about its existence. GDP or growth does not matter. To live without a monster & having a peace is more important than the financial or economic numbers.
