Congressmen call DOJ’s action a ‘misguided crusade’

Six US Congressmen have written to Attorney General Pam Bondi demanding an investigation into the Department of Justice (DOJ)’s indictment of Adani Group officials under the Biden administration. The lawmakers—Lance Gooden, Pat Fallon, Mike Haridopolos, Brandon Gill, William R. Timmons, and Brian Babin—criticized the DOJ’s move as an unwise decision that could damage US-India relations.

In November 2023, the Adani Group rejected the DOJ’s allegations as baseless, emphasizing that no wrongdoing had occurred.

Concerns over US-India strategic partnership

The Congressmen argued that the indictment jeopardized diplomatic ties with India, a key strategic ally. They highlighted that:

  • The case is based on allegations of bribery within India, involving Indian officials and company executives—with no direct impact on US interests.
  • Instead of allowing Indian authorities to handle the matter, the Biden DOJ pushed forward with the indictment, raising suspicions about external political motivations.

Trump’s commitment to strengthening economic ties with India

The lawmakers stressed that former President Trump values strong economic ties with India, a partnership they deem essential for America’s economic revival. They warned that:

  • Politically motivated actions discourage foreign investment, affecting US job creation and economic growth.
  • Singling out the Adani Group, which has invested tens of billions of dollars in the US, undermines economic cooperation.

Concerns over US foreign policy and China’s growing influence

The letter warned that:

  • A strained US-India relationship would benefit China, which seeks to dominate global trade through its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
  • Poor diplomatic decisions could undo years of economic and military cooperation between the US and India.

Request for investigation into Biden DOJ’s actions

The Congressmen called on Attorney General Pam Bondi to:

  • Review the DOJ’s decision-making process behind the indictment.
  • Share all records related to the case for further examination.
  • Ensure that US-India relations are not harmed by politically motivated prosecutions.

Conclusion

The demand for a DOJ review reflects growing concerns among US lawmakers that legal actions under the Biden administration could negatively impact diplomatic and economic partnerships. With President Trump’s return to office, his administration is expected to reassess foreign policy decisions that could influence global economic alliances.

  1. Great day for Indian Businessman. It is beyond doubt that businessman across countries have innate support of their respective govt. Such support it only for its own growth & not for manipulating the people or looting it. Adani might have taken billion dollars loans, but he is returning it.
It is different matter that ordinary people do not get Rs. 100 loan from any bank unless he sells himself & his entire family to the last grain of sand & last grain of rice & last elemental oxygen
