Biden urges Americans in Ukraine to leave the country immediately
The United States has issued a new advisory urging Americans in Ukraine to leave the country at the earliest possibility, strengthening earlier warnings that urged its citizens to “consider” such action, US State Department said in a travel advisory.
Multiple media outlets reported that President Joe Biden will speak to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin over the telephone on Saturday, moving up a Kremlin-proposed schedule from February 14.
The US has cited “increased threats of Russian military action“. “Do not travel to Ukraine due to the increased threats of Russian military action and COVID-19; those in Ukraine should depart now via commercial or private means,” says the advisory.
The US has been releasing intelligence which it claims is proof that Russia is prepared to mount military aggression against Ukraine any time now, but Moscow has accused Washington of “hysteria” over tensions near Kiev.
Direct engagements between the US and Russia have yielded little substantial progress, with the Kremlin saying the White House failed to address its key security concerns.
Earlier, On January 23, the State Department authorized the evacuation of US diplomats’ family members and of direct-hire employees. The State Department also recommended that US citizens who were present in Ukraine should consider departing right away due to the unpredictable security situation.
