Atiq Ahmed, brother Ashraf shot dead while being taken for medical
A day after Atiq Ahmad‘s son Asad was killed in an encounter in Jhansi, some unidentified people opened fire at the gangster-turned-politician Atiq and his brother Ashraf near a medical college in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj on April 15 night.
The firing by the unidentified people was caught on camera as media persons were present while the police were taking Atiq and his brother for a medical checkup.
At least three persons were seen firing from close range at Atiq and his brother who fell to the ground, while the police soon overpowered the attackers.
Both of them had been brought to Pryagraj for a court hearing concerning the 2005 BSP MLA Raju Pal murder case. Ahmad’s son and an accomplice were killed in a police encounter in Jhansi on April 13.
Mafia don-turned-politician, Atiq Ahmed was convicted by an MP-MLA court on March 28, and sentenced to rigorous life imprisonment in the abduction case of now-deceased Umesh Pal. This is Ahmed’s first conviction even though more than 100 cases were registered against him.
An MP-MLA court held gangster-politician Atiq Ahmad and two others guilty in the 2006 Umesh Pal kidnapping case and sentenced them to life imprisonment. Ahmad’s brother Khalid Azim alias Ashraf and six others have been acquitted in the case.
Special MP-MLA court judge Dinesh Chandra Shukla held Ahmad, Saulat Hanif, a lawyer, and Dinesh Pasi guilty. The three were pronounced guilty under Indian Penal Code Section 364-A (kidnapping or abduction in order to murder).

The killing of convicted duo in the broad day light in public view while in police custody is clear sign of the extreme level of hate and distrust in the system. The systematic destruction of the justice delivery system since independence is the result of this action. The wonderful words and sermonizing on the human rights, free speech and even dignity in execution is far away from reality on the ground. It is amazing that judiciary and legislators show no inclination to make common cause in stead of commenting on each other.
