World Bank chief Ajay Banga met External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman

World Bank President Ajay Banga met Foreign Minister Dr. S Jaishankar and discussed ways to strengthen regional connectivity. They also exchanged views about the concerns of the Global South.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman met World Bank Group President Ajay Banga and discussed the deepening of partnership to secure tangible outcomes at the G20 Leaders’ Summit scheduled to take place in September.

Sitharaman and Ajay Banga discussed India’s sectoral priorities which include municipal financing, logistics, recycling of water, and renewable energy grids, for seeking assistance from the World Bank Group in leveraging private investments.

“Delighted to meet @worldbank President Ajay Banga during his India visit. Appreciate World Bank’s support for India’s G20 Presidency. Discussed India’s endeavors to strengthen regional connectivity, promote regional prosperity and propel larger development,” Jaishankar tweeted after the meeting.

Domestic consumption provides a natural cushion to the Indian economy against global slowdown as the bulk of the country’s GDP depends on local demand, he had told reporters after meeting Sitharaman.

“We talked about everything we did at G20 and how the meeting went. We talked about what the World Bank and India can do further as well as the G20 part of it. India is the largest market for the World Bank in terms of our portfolio here. There is a lot of interest here,” he had said.

Earlier during an event, the World Bank President had said that India has come out strong from the challenges posed by the Covid pandemic but the momentum needs to be maintained.
