Droupadi Murmu: Lesser-known facts about India’s new President

A relatively less well-known tribal woman, Droupadi Murmu, from a village in Odisha with humble beginnings turned her tragic life journey into triumphant as India’s 15th President-elect. It is a remarkable feat that very few people achieve in life. When she was nominated by no other than Prime Minister Modi, he wrote, “Smt. Droupadi Murmu Ji has devoted her life to serving society and empowering the poor, the downtrodden, and the marginalized…” In political terms, it was Modi’s super-master stroke that caught everyone by surprise and particularly shook the gang of opposition political parties and Hindu-bashing media. Why?

Because Murmu possessed at least five remarkable attributes that could not be matched by anyone. These included:

1. Her tribal ancestry and a woman; a role model for every aspiring girl and women.
2. A villager from Odisha to give hope to about 65% population still living in the villages, and her demonstrated service to uplifting and empowering the backward.
3. Poor.
4. Downtrodden.
5. Marginalized.

She rose through the ranks knowing the realities of life as a mother, teacher, social worker, and politician with a divine soul to help humankind. In her own journey, a loving mother of three, she suffered the most tragic events of losing her two sons and husband. Those indescribable sufferings are perhaps the signature of her strength and determination which led to her rightful victory as the Constitutional Head of State role which will take her from the dusty roads of a village in Odisha to the most ornate Rashtrapati Bhawan in a matter of days.

It is no coincidence but a divine gift that Murmu secured 5,77,777 votes[1]. In Hinduism, each number has its own significance but 5, 7, and 11 are auspicious with something special about them. In Murmu’s case, we not only have 5 as the first number but five 7s (77777). I am neither an astrologer nor a numerologist but that number in the mainstream media intrigued and motivated me to do a little research and write about it.

In Hinduism, the number 5 is associated with the Goddess Saraswati representing knowledge and intellect. Additionally, Hindus believe in 5 elements in the universe i.e., dharti, agni, jal, vayu, and akash (earth, fire, water, air, and space, respectively). Another significance includes the five senses – ears, eyes, nose, tongue, and skin which are essential to our living. Among the Panchkanyas (Draupadi, Ahilya, Sita, Tara, and Mandodari), the next President Droupadi Murmu symbolizes the vast capacity for thinking and understanding life in the right sense and thus liberating herself from her tragic life events. It will be hard to find another person as capable and resilient who returned to her own self and continued to march ahead. We salute her.

The five 7s are the most intriguing. Just the number seven by itself is about balance and curious souls creating a happy life. It also symbolizes love. Further, the number seven runs rather deep in Hinduism with Saptarishi (7 Sages), 7 Chakras, 7 Days, 7 Svara, 7 colors in rainbow (Indradhanush), and 7 pheras during the marriage.

India’s next President Murmu has five 7s while just three 7’s (777) have been called an Angel number[2]. A few attributes of 777 include a sign of God’s compassion and mercy. It means that the entire universe is supporting you on your spiritual journey, even if you are really confused (Murmu is not confused but happily surprised by her win). It is also a symbolic message from the divine that you should use your wisdom to guide others around you who are struggling in their lives. No one knows better than President-elect Murmu about the struggle in life.

The appearance of 777 in the number of votes was destined for Murmu to tap into her soul’s positive energy to help her future journey toward spiritual enlightenment and the awesome responsibility of her position. The 777 has already encouraged her to boost her morale and soar to new heights. In her case, as a wise and experienced person, the number 777 appeared now but may have been in her destiny long before that.

Another author of Hindu origin explains the significance of 777 differently[3]. It is a number sent from heaven reminding people that they are more than the color of their hair, skin, and nationalities. It tells them to look past their eyes and see within as a beautiful soul. According to her, 777 is the sign of the divine trinity of the divine feminine (Saraswati-Laxmi-Parvati) who represent the unity and wholesomeness of souls that are around us. President-elect Murmu signifies all of that and more. Equally relevant in Murmu’s case is that 777 people may be shy in general but they are the leaders, the teachers, and the activists who change the world by putting their heart and soul into what they believe in even at a great cost to themselves.

Yet another interpretation is that 777 can symbolize that we are here to learn the lessons of service, responsibility, forgiveness, compassion, and unconditional love[4]. When we embody these five qualities it is much easier to serve others in the world. I believe that Murmu is elected to be in that role and embodies those five qualities. The number 777 is also a sign that one has reached a turning point which heralds new beginnings and an abundance of positive energy to help along the way. This is a time for Murmu to get in action and realize dreams, discharge the awesome responsibilities, and make a difference.

There is an abundance of literature analyzing 777 in the context of spirituality and from a numerology point of view. In the present context, we have 77777 which, in the simplest terms, may mean significantly enhanced impact and significance of what we know and discussed about 777. Let us call 77777 a divine number higher in rank than the Angel number.

Now, as the 15th President, we know more about Murmu’s personal tragedies and a true journey of resilience and ‘self-pride’. The first unforgettable moment was the unexpected death of his 25-year-old son which broke her. In Brahma Kumari’s television program, Droupadi Murmu herself said, “The tsunami came into my life in 2009. It was a huge jolt to me. I couldn’t hear anything for a few days. I slipped into depression. Log kehte the ye to mar jayegi (People thought I would not survive). But, no, I wanted to live.” Since then, she has learned Sahaj Rajyog and changed her life with a spiritual bent. She now gets up around 3.30 am and retires to bed by 9.30 pm; do yoga and meditation unfailingly.

Although, the tragedy struck again when her younger son died in a road accident. She was once again broken completely asking, “God, what more do you want from me? What is left now?’” The catastrophe came in droves in her life including the death of her husband.

The emergence of 5,77,777 in her vote count was always in her destiny which sustained her in the thick and thin of life events. She was perhaps born not with a silver spoon in her mouth but to be a divine soul and a fighter to make a difference in the world not only as a spiritual person but as a leader, teacher, and activist.

The parents of Droupadi Murmu had the foresight to name her appropriately with a character of Draupadi, the person with divinity, in Mahabharat. Similarly, Murmu has a soul of divinity with resiliency, open-heartedness, unassuming political sensitivity and savviness, the ability to govern with determination, and is an insightful person destined to be the next Indian President.

Let us all celebrate her victory and wish her well in the discharge of her constitutional role and responsibilities with an abiding faith in God. May the spiritual Murmu live healthy and happy and continue to help the Vanchit (the poor, neglected, marginalized, and underprivileged) become Sanchit during her Presidency.
