Modi Warns: Infiltrators Threaten India’s Social Fabric
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday issued a strong warning about the potential threat to India’s “unity in diversity“, stating that infiltration leading to demographic shifts poses risks to the nation’s social harmony and internal security.
“If this strength is broken, India will weaken,” the Prime Minister said, addressing a gathering at the centenary celebrations of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the ideological parent of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Reiterating his message from the Independence Day address, the Prime Minister highlighted his announcement of a “Demographic Mission”, which he said is aimed at protecting Indian citizens from the impact of illegal infiltration.
“This is why I announced the Demographic Mission… to stop infiltrators from snatching the livelihood of our youth and targeting our sisters and daughters,” he said.
The remarks are consistent with previous statements where the Prime Minister linked illegal immigration to security and economic concerns, particularly in border states.
The Prime Minister’s comments have drawn political scrutiny, particularly in West Bengal, where the Trinamool Congress (TMC), led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, has previously clashed with the Centre over such claims.
The Prime Minister had earlier accused the TMC of facilitating cross-border infiltration from Bangladesh for political gain — a charge the party has strongly denied, calling it an “insult to Bengalis” and a divisive narrative.
In response, the Trinamool has countered that border security is the responsibility of the central government, and if infiltration is indeed occurring, it is a failure of the Centre’s governance, not the state.
The TMC has also accused the BJP of promoting xenophobia through repeated references to demographic threats and infiltration.
Broader Implications
The PM’s emphasis on demographic change and its consequences is likely to shape the national discourse ahead of key state elections next year, especially in regions with border sensitivities.
As the political debate intensifies, the government is expected to provide further clarity on the scope and implementation of the Demographic Mission in the coming months.
