Ceasefire tied to Trump’s 20-point peace plan as both sides move toward talks
Israel has temporarily halted its bombing campaign in the Gaza Strip to allow progress on a proposed hostage-release agreement and a 20-point peace plan, US President Donald Trump announced on Saturday.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the pause was intended to give both sides a chance to finalise the deal.
“Hamas must move quickly, or else all bets will be off,” Trump wrote. “I will not tolerate delay. Let’s get this done, FAST.”
In a subsequent post, Trump said that following negotiations, Israel had agreed to an “initial withdrawal line,” which had been shared with Hamas.
“When Hamas confirms, the ceasefire will be immediately effective, the hostages and prisoner exchange will begin, and we will create the conditions for the next phase of withdrawal, which will bring us close to the end of this 3,000-year catastrophe,” Trump said.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he expects to announce the release of all hostages from Gaza “in the coming days,” as indirect talks with Hamas continued in Egypt under US mediation.
In a brief statement on Saturday, Netanyahu confirmed that a delegation had been sent to Cairo “to finalise technical details,” adding that the talks were expected to conclude within a few days.
Trump had earlier issued an ultimatum to Hamas, giving the group until Sunday evening (US time) to accept his 20-point peace proposal or face “all hell like no one has ever seen before.”
Hours later, Hamas announced that it had accepted the plan “in principle” and was ready to begin mediated discussions — a move widely welcomed by the international community, which urged both sides to seize the opportunity to end the war and ease the humanitarian crisis.
The proposed framework includes a ceasefire-for-hostages deal, a phased Israeli withdrawal, a demilitarised Gaza, and international oversight for Gaza’s reconstruction and post-war governance. Hamas would be excluded from the new administrative structure.
Under the agreement, Israel would halt military operations and pull back to designated lines. Within 72 hours of Israel’s acceptance, Hamas would be required to release all hostages, both alive and deceased.
In exchange, Israel would release 250 prisoners serving life sentences and 1,700 Gazans detained after October 7, 2023. Disarmed Hamas members pledging peaceful coexistence would receive amnesty, while those choosing exile would be granted safe passage to other countries.
