BCI bars lawyer from practice across India
The Bar Council of India (BCI) on Monday suspended advocate Rakesh Kishore with immediate effect after he allegedly attempted to attack Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai inside the Supreme Court during ongoing proceedings.
According to the BCI’s interim order, the incident occurred around 11:35 a.m. on October 6, 2025, in Court No. 1, when Kishore, enrolled with the Bar Council of Delhi (No. D/1647/2009), removed his sports shoes and attempted to hurl them toward the Chief Justice. He was immediately detained by security personnel present in the courtroom.
In a letter issued to Kishore and the Bar Council of Delhi, BCI Chairperson Manan Kumar Mishra described the act as a serious breach of professional ethics and decorum, stating that such conduct was “inconsistent with the Rules on Standards of Professional Conduct and the dignity of the court.”
“In view of the foregoing, you i.e., Advocate Rakesh Kishore, are suspended from practice with immediate effect,” the order read.
The suspension bars Kishore from appearing, acting, pleading, or practising in any court, tribunal, or authority across India. The BCI also directed the Delhi Bar Council to ensure immediate compliance, update its status on its rolls, and notify all courts and tribunals within its jurisdiction.
The interim order will be circulated to the registries of the Supreme Court, all High Courts, and District Courts, as well as to Bar Associations, including the Supreme Court Bar Association.
“Any identity card, proximity pass, or access permission issued to you in the capacity of an advocate shall remain inoperative during the operation of this order,” the BCI stated.
Kishore has been asked to file an affidavit of compliance within 48 hours, confirming he is not appearing in any matter during the suspension period. The BCI will also issue a show-cause notice asking him to explain within 15 days why the suspension should not continue or lead to further disciplinary action.
The BCI clarified that the suspension is an interim measure and “without prejudice to proceedings under the Advocates Act, 1961, or general law.”
