Built at ₹19,650 crore, the airport aims to handle 2 crore passengers annually
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday inaugurated the state-of-the-art Navi Mumbai International Airport, a landmark infrastructure project expected to significantly boost trade, connectivity, and tourism across Mumbai, Pune, and the Konkan region.
Before the formal inauguration, the Prime Minister was given a walkthrough of the airport’s world-class facilities. He was accompanied by Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, and Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani.
Addressing the gathering, PM Modi said the airport’s completion “has ended Mumbai’s long wait,” adding that the project aligns with his government’s ‘Viksit Bharat’ vision of ‘gati aur pragati’ (speed and progress).
“India had only 74 airports in 2014; today, that number has more than doubled to 160. Through the UDAN Yojana, lakhs of people have been able to fly for the first time, turning dreams into reality,” the Prime Minister said.
Built at a cost of ₹19,650 crore, the airport is designed to handle up to two crore passengers annually in its initial phase. It is expected to ease pressure on Mumbai’s existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport while providing direct global market access for industries in Pune and surrounding regions.
Developed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) between Mumbai International Airport Ltd (a subsidiary of Adani Airports Holdings Ltd) and CIDCO (City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra Ltd), the facility is India’s largest greenfield airport project.
Ahead of the inauguration, Gautam Adani praised the collective effort that brought the project to life. Responding to a post by his son Jeet Adani, Director of Airports at the Adani Group, he wrote, “To every hand that worked and every heart that cared — this is your creation.”
The airport features a 3,700-metre runway and will operate in tandem with Mumbai’s main airport to ensure smoother passenger and cargo movement across western India.
With its inauguration, Navi Mumbai International Airport is poised to become a major aviation hub, bolstering India’s position as one of the fastest-growing air travel markets in the world.
