Nandan Nilekani to head Centre’s task force on examination reforms

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday announced the formation of a high-powered task force headed by Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani to overhaul India’s examination system, with a focus on improving transparency, reliability and the use of technology.

In a video message posted on X, the Prime Minister said the panel would study the country’s examination framework and submit recommendations, which would guide future reforms.

“Based on that report, the work to ensure the reliability of upcoming examinations will be done,” PM Modi said.

Focus on transparent, technology-driven exams

Referring to the recent NEET paper leak controversy, the Prime Minister said the government had already taken strict action against those responsible and was moving ahead with structural reforms to safeguard the future of students.

“Those who played with the future of students are rotting in jails. We have set up fast-track courts, and we are moving forward in Parliament with a new law containing strict legal provisions,” he said.

PM Modi stressed that India’s examination system must become more transparent, reliable and technology-driven.

Keeping these objectives in mind, he said, the government had decided to constitute a high-powered task force under Nandan Nilekani to recommend long-term reforms.

Nilekani to lead examination overhaul

Nandan Nilekani, co-founder of Infosys and former Chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), has played a key role in several technology-led public initiatives.

As co-founder of the eGov Foundation, he has worked to improve urban governance through digital platforms, while his EkStep Foundation focuses on enhancing foundational literacy and numeracy through technology.

An IIT Bombay graduate, Nilekani has been honoured with the Padma Bhushan and the Joseph Schumpeter Prize for his contributions to technology and public service.

The announcement comes a day after the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) called off its protest over the NEET paper leak following the resignation of former Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
