Rahul Mamkootathil resurfaces, defies police

Rahul Mamkootathil, the sexually perverted MLA and Congress leader who is also a close associate of Rahul Gandhi, made a sudden appearance at Palakkad, cast his vote in the local body election, and vanished into thin air cocking a snook at the cops who were tracking him for the last fifteen days. Mamkootathil is the prime accused in two cases of rape, black mailing and forced abortion filed by two ladies in the state.

Though he managed to get anticipatory bail in both cases, the police were tracking him without any breakthrough for the last 15 days. When he made his appearance at his MLA office in Palakkad, Mamkootathil was swarmed by hundreds of Congress activists who showered flowers and garlands on him. “Rahul Mamkootathil Zindabad, Rahul Gandhi Zindabad“ were echoed throughout the pathways. “I do not have anything to tell you. I’ll tell the details in the court,” retorted Mamkootathil when reporters quizzed him about his whereabouts and how he managed to corner the two ladies.

Interestingly, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, while speaking to reporters at Kannur after casting his vote, reiterated his charge that Mamkootathil was a sexually perverted MLA. “His ouster from the party is not a sincere move by the Congress. It is all for public consumption,” said the Chief Minister. True to the charge made by Vijayan, the president of Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee, Sunny Joseph said at Kochi on Thursday that the complaint against Mamkootathil, accusing him of rape, was drafted by one of the best legal brains. “This is what I could infer from the complaint. I don’t know how an ordinary person could draft such a complaint,” said Joseph.

Rahul Mamkootathil drove away to an undisclosed location after casting his vote. One of the Congress leaders in Palakkad said that the MLA might have gone to Adoor, his hometown, to meet his mother and other girlfriends.

Meanwhile, the CPI(M) is also in the dock thanks to the sexual escapades of its MLA Mukesh, former MLAs P T Kunju Mohammed and P K Sasi. The Chief Minister’s office had received a complaint from an actress against Kunju Mohammed, accusing the latter of raping her. Kunju Mohammed is a movie maker who has directed five movies and has won honours from various Islamic and Marxist outfits for the same.

Ramesh Chennithala, member, Congress Working Committee, said on Thursday that Chief Minister Pinarai Vijayan should rein in CPI(M) leaders and MLAs from molesting women before pointing fingers at others. “He put the complaint against Kunju Mohammed under the carpet for 15 days even as he was rebuking the Congress MLAs,” said Chennithala.

The present situation in Kerala reminds one of a cartoon drawn by R K Laxman in The Times of India way back in the 1980s, depicting the Council of Ministers in the state. Those were the days when there were serious allegations of corruption against ministers. One minister is portrayed in the cartoon arguing with another minister. “I am more honest than you. There are six corruption charges against you, while there are only five charges against me,” says one minister to his colleague during the cabinet meeting. The only difference is that, instead of cash, the number of rape charges and molestations against MLAs and ministers is the bone of contention now.
