PM Modi-Al Nahyan talks focus on trade, defence and regional security
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday received United Arab Emirates President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan at the Delhi airport, underlining the strategic importance New Delhi attaches to the visit amid heightened tensions in the Middle East.
According to the schedule released by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), President Al Nahyan’s visit to the national capital is brief, lasting less than two hours. Despite the short duration, the visit carries significant diplomatic weight.
The UAE leader’s trip comes against the backdrop of a volatile regional landscape, marked by the sharp deterioration in Iran–US relations, ongoing tensions linked to the Yemen conflict, and an unsettled political and security situation in Gaza.
Prime Minister Modi and President Al Nahyan are expected to hold wide-ranging talks, with trade and investment, defence industry cooperation, and energy initiatives high on the agenda, people familiar with the matter said. The evolving security situation in the Middle East is also likely to feature prominently during the discussions.
This marks President Al Nahyan’s third official visit to India since assuming office, and his fifth visit to the country in the last decade, reflecting the deepening strategic partnership between New Delhi and Abu Dhabi.
Bilateral ties have seen a major upswing following the signing of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) in 2022, which has significantly boosted trade volumes and strengthened people-to-people connections between the two countries.
