Strong youth engagement powers digital dominance
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has crossed a major digital milestone, becoming the first world leader and politician to surpass 100 million followers on Instagram, reinforcing his global social media dominance.
Since joining the platform in 2014, his account has grown steadily into one of the most followed and engaged political profiles worldwide. Through posts featuring official engagements, foreign visits, public outreach initiatives, cultural highlights and personal reflections, he has built a strong connection with a diverse audience.
With this achievement, PM Modi ranks first among global leaders on Instagram, holding a substantial lead over US President Donald Trump, who is second with 43.2 million followers. Other leaders trail behind, including Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto (15 million), Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (14.4 million), Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan (11.6 million) and Argentine President Javier Milei (6.4 million).
Notably, the combined follower count of the next five major world leaders remains below PM Modi’s individual total, underscoring the scale of his digital reach. Analysts say his presence resonates strongly with younger audiences in India and abroad, reflecting the evolving nature of political communication.
Within India, the gap is equally pronounced. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath follows with around 16.1 million followers, while Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has approximately 12.6 million.
The milestone highlights the growing role of visual and interactive platforms like Instagram in enabling leaders to engage directly with citizens, with social media remaining a key outreach and communication tool for the Prime Minister.
