ISI-backed terror and arms smuggling module busted in Punjab’s Amritsar

The Punjab Police has busted an ISI-sponsored terror and cross-border arms smuggling module in Amritsar, arresting two accused and recovering sophisticated weapons, including an AK-47 rifle, pistols, and live cartridges, officials said.

According to the Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab, the accused were allegedly in contact with foreign-based handlers through social media platforms and were involved in radicalisation activities and spreading anti-India and anti-police narratives.

In a post on X, the DGP said an FIR had been registered at Gharinda Police Station in Amritsar Rural and further investigation was underway to dismantle the entire network.

“An FIR has been registered at PS Gharinda, Amritsar Rural. Further investigation is underway to establish forward and backward linkages and dismantle the entire network. Punjab Police remains steadfast in its zero-tolerance approach against terrorism, illegal arms trafficking and organised crime,” the post said.

Weapons recovered

During the operation, police recovered one AK-47 rifle with two magazines and 36 live cartridges, along with three sophisticated Glock 9mm pistols, from the accused.

Officials said the recovery points to a cross-border arms smuggling network allegedly backed by Inter-Services Intelligence.

Earlier arrests linked to Nalagarh blast

In a related development earlier this year, Counter Intelligence Jalandhar, in a joint operation with Counter Intelligence SAS Nagar, arrested two suspects allegedly involved in the January 1, 2026 blast at the Nalagarh Police Station in Himachal Pradesh.

Police identified the accused as Mahavir alias Kaka and Manpreet alias Mani, both residents of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar.

During that operation, authorities recovered a 9mm Glock pistol and live cartridges from their possession.

Links to banned terror outfit

Preliminary investigations revealed that the accused were acting under the directions of foreign-based masterminds Gopi Nawashehria and Jassi Kulam, who are allegedly associated with the banned terror outfit Babbar Khalsa International.

Investigators said the suspects and their accomplices had procured consignments containing IEDs (RDX) and hand grenades on the instructions of their foreign handlers. One such IED was reportedly used in the blast at the Nalagarh Police Station earlier this year.

Police said further investigations are ongoing to identify additional members of the network and trace the cross-border supply chain.
