India highlights risks to energy security and global trade

India has strongly condemned recent attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, warning that such actions threaten global trade, energy flows, and regional stability.

Speaking at the United Nations Security Council, India’s Deputy Permanent Representative Yojna Patel said targeting civilian vessels was unacceptable and must stop immediately.

“Commercial shipping must not be the target of military attacks, and such attempts are deplorable,” Patel said during a council meeting on the Middle East.

Reference to Iran and UNSC resolution

While Patel did not directly name any country, she referred to Iran by highlighting its past actions in the region.

She noted that India had co-sponsored a Security Council resolution introduced by Bahrain that condemned Tehran’s attacks on its neighbours.

“It bears mention in this context that India had co-sponsored UNSC Resolution 2817, which was adopted on March 11,” she said.

    Indian ships targeted, sailors killed

India also raised concerns over direct impacts on its citizens and maritime interests. According to officials, Iranian-linked attacks have targeted Indian vessels and ships bound for India.

In separate incidents involving ships of other nations, at least three Indian sailors have lost their lives, underscoring the growing risks to civilian crews navigating the region.

The situation has further escalated with the United States establishing a blockade in the Hormuz region, intensifying geopolitical tensions in one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes.

India warned that any disruption in this corridor could have serious consequences for global commerce.

Energy security and Indian diaspora at risk

Patel stressed that uninterrupted shipping through the Strait is vital for India’s economy and energy security, given its dependence on the region for oil imports.

She also highlighted the human dimension, noting that nearly 10 million Indians live and work in Gulf countries.

“Their safety and well-being are a key priority for us,” she said.

    Call for diplomacy and de-escalation

Urging restraint, India called for dialogue and diplomacy to reduce tensions in the region.

“The Middle East is our proximate neighbourhood, and we have significant stakes in the security and stability of the region,” Patel said.
