Indian student pursuing higher education in Canada found dead in Niagara region after going missing

A 22-year-old Indian student from Gujarat was allegedly stabbed to death in Canada’s Niagara region near the US border, in yet another tragic incident involving an Indian student abroad.

The victim, identified as Vidhi Megha from Borsad in Gujarat’s Anand district, had been living in Canada for higher studies while also working part-time to support herself financially.

According to reports, Vidhi had gone missing on May 15. During the subsequent investigation, Canadian authorities discovered her body in the Niagara region near the US border and determined that she had been stabbed to death.

Police have registered a murder case and launched a search operation to identify and arrest the accused. Officials reportedly said the suspect is likely to be apprehended soon as the investigation progresses.

Vidhi was reportedly preparing to apply for Permanent Residency (PR) in Canada while continuing her education and employment.

The incident has once again raised concerns among Indian families and students regarding the safety of international students in Canada amid a series of violent crimes reported over the past two years.

Several Indian-origin students have died in separate violent incidents across Canada in recent months.

In December 2025, 20-year-old doctoral student Shivank Awasthi was shot dead near the University of Toronto’s Scarborough campus, with his body later recovered near Highland Creek Trail.

Earlier in April 2025, Harsimrat Randhawa, a 21-year-old Indian student, died in Hamilton after being hit by a stray bullet during a shootout between rival groups while standing at a bus stop.

In another shocking case in December 2024, 20-year-old Sikh student Harshdeep Singh Antal was shot dead in Edmonton while working part-time as a security guard at an apartment complex.

The latest killing is likely to intensify concerns within India’s student community regarding rising safety risks faced by international students pursuing education and employment opportunities overseas.
