Assam Police have launched a cyber crime investigation after alleged AI-generated deepfake images of students and teachers surfaced online
A leading school in Guwahati has found itself at the centre of a cyber crime investigation after alleged AI-generated deepfake images of students and teachers surfaced online, prompting concerns over privacy, digital safety and the misuse of artificial intelligence.
The controversy emerged after digitally altered and allegedly obscene images of several female students and teachers from St Francis De Sales (SFS) School began circulating on social media platforms and messaging applications, including Telegram. The images were reportedly created using artificial intelligence tools and shared without the knowledge or consent of those depicted.
Police probe origin and circulation of content
The Cyber Crime Branch of Assam Police has launched an investigation to trace the origin, creation and circulation of the alleged deepfake content. Investigators are also examining claims that some of the images may have been distributed in exchange for money.
Officials are expected to analyse digital devices, online communication records and social media activity as part of the ongoing probe.
School initiates inquiry, suspends students
In an official statement issued on June 12, the school confirmed that the matter was immediately referred to its internal committees, including the Child Abuse Monitoring Committee (CAMC).
The institution said a preliminary inquiry had already begun and meetings were held with concerned parents and guardians.
As an interim measure, students allegedly linked to the incident have been suspended pending completion of the inquiry. The school said further action would be taken in accordance with school rules and applicable laws after investigations conclude.
School reiterates zero-tolerance policy
The school reiterated its zero-tolerance approach towards cyber misconduct, bullying, harassment, misuse of digital platforms and any activity that compromises the safety, dignity or privacy of students and staff.
Growing concern over AI misuse
The incident has reignited concerns over the increasing misuse of artificial intelligence and deepfake technology, particularly among young users.
Cybersecurity experts have repeatedly warned that AI-generated content can cause significant psychological distress, reputational damage and long-term digital harm, especially when minors become targets.
Assam Police have also regularly advised schools and parents to exercise caution while sharing children’s photographs online and have conducted awareness campaigns focused on cyber safety and responsible digital behaviour.
