Victim escapes after overnight captivity in Dhaka; police launch probe as family recounts ransom demand and brutal assault

A 25-year-old Hindu student who occasionally serves as an assistant priest at a temple in Bangladesh was allegedly kidnapped, assaulted and held for ransom in Dhaka before managing to escape, prompting a police investigation into the incident.

The victim, identified as Subhash Deuri, is currently undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital after allegedly suffering serious injuries during his captivity.

According to local media reports, Deuri, a first-year law student at Central Law College in Old Dhaka, was allegedly abducted on Monday evening after arriving in the Swamibagh area by rickshaw. His family claimed unidentified men took him captive, assaulted him and demanded money for his release.

    Family alleges ransom demand

Deuri’s sister, Jaya, said she received a call from her brother’s phone around 1 am on Tuesday. The caller allegedly demanded 30,000 Bangladeshi Taka as ransom.

According to the family, the abductors provided a bank account for the payment. After 26,000 Bangladeshi Taka was transferred, Deuri was allegedly abandoned in the Old Dhaka area.

His relative, Dipu Barman, said the victim sustained fractures to his leg and hip during the ordeal and is expected to undergo surgery.

Victim escaped by jumping from building: Police

Wari Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mofizur Rahman said Deuri informed investigators that he had visited a temple in Swamibagh on Monday night when several individuals allegedly abducted him and confined him inside a house.

According to police, Deuri managed to escape in the early hours of Tuesday by jumping from part of the building, sustaining injuries in the process.

Authorities have launched an investigation to identify those responsible and determine the circumstances surrounding the alleged kidnapping.

    Temple committee issues clarification

Following reports describing Deuri as a temple priest, the Jagannath University Central Temple Committee clarified that he is not a permanent priest.

Anik Kumar Das, the committee’s member secretary, said the temple’s regular priest is Saikat Pathak, while Deuri occasionally performs religious rituals in his absence. He added that the alleged incident has no direct connection with the temple.

    Community body seeks details

Kajal Debnath, spokesperson for the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council, said the organisation was gathering information to determine whether the incident was a targeted attack or an ordinary criminal act such as kidnapping for ransom.

Investigators have not yet established whether Deuri was targeted because of his religious identity. Police said the probe is continuing and further details are expected after questioning witnesses and analysing available evidence.
