US President Donald Trump has shared an AI-generated video depicting Iran’s strategic Kharg Island being destroyed in massive explosions, escalating tensions with Tehran after fresh US-Iran military exchanges.
Trump posted the video on his Truth Social platform with the caption: “Kharg Island being blown to smithereens!!! President DJT.” The footage appears to show an oil storage facility and an oil tanker erupting in explosions as an aircraft flies overhead.
However, there was no evidence that Kharg Island had actually been attacked at the time of Trump’s post. The video was generated using artificial intelligence and depicted an imagined attack rather than verified footage of a real strike.
US strikes Larak Island, not Kharg
Trump’s post came hours after US forces carried out airstrikes against Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island, a smaller island located in the Strait of Hormuz.
The US military said the strikes were aimed at preventing Iran from deploying additional sea mines in the strategic waterway. The operation marked the first reported US attacks on Iranian positions since late July.
The distinction between Larak and Kharg is significant. While Larak is strategically located near the Strait of Hormuz, Kharg is one of Iran’s most important oil export hubs and has repeatedly figured in Trump’s threats against Tehran.
