PM Modi-Putin Meet Sets The Stage For BRICS

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold a bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in New Delhi on September 11, a day before the BRICS Leaders‘ Summit formally opens. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed the engagement, noting the two leaders remain in close and continuing contact.

Peskov, briefing reporters virtually from Moscow, said the two sides would first work through the bilateral agenda before turning to the wider BRICS discussions — trade and economic cooperation chief among them.

Su-57 Jets And Nuclear Plants On The Table

The headline item, per Peskov, is the potential sale of Su-57 fighter aircraft to India, alongside Russia’s willingness to discuss technology transfer New Delhi has been seeking. Moscow is also expecting talks on new nuclear power plants, with security, counter-narcotics, counterterrorism and space cooperation rounding out the agenda.

This will be the second Modi-Putin meeting in a matter of weeks. The two last met on the sidelines of the SCO Summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, where Modi told Putin it was time to end the “endless” war in Ukraine. The Delhi meeting also comes days after External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar‘s visit to both Ukraine and Russia.

The Currency Signal

Peskov used the briefing to flag a quieter shift: roughly 90 percent of transactions between Russia and BRICS nations are now settled in national currencies rather than the US dollar. He framed this as a matter of flexibility rather than an anti-dollar campaign, while pointing to how certain countries have used currency access as a lever of political pressure — an implicit reference to Western sanctions on Moscow.

India’s Fourth Turn At The Chair

The 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit runs September 12–13 at Bharat Mandapam, with a Business Forum and a Women’s Business Alliance session on September 11. India took over the BRICS presidency on January 1, its fourth time chairing the bloc, under the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.” Under this chairship, India has run more than 350 BRICS-related meetings across over 25 cities.

Putin will be joined at the summit by Chinese President Xi Jinping, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, among other leaders of the now 11-member expanded grouping.
