PM Modi and UAE President discussed West Asia, regional stability, and India-UAE strategic ties
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on Tuesday held talks on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Evian-les-Bains, France, focusing on the evolving situation in West Asia and ways to further strengthen the India-UAE Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
During the meeting, both leaders emphasised the importance of dialogue, diplomacy and respect for international law, sovereignty and territorial integrity to ensure lasting peace, security and stability in the region.
In a post on X, PM Modi described the interaction as a “very good meeting” and said the two leaders reviewed bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors and explored ways to deepen strategic ties. He also thanked the UAE leadership for its continued support and care for the Indian community living in the Gulf nation.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the two leaders exchanged views on the security situation in West Asia and stressed the need for continued free, safe and unimpeded navigation and commerce through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global energy corridor.
The meeting comes shortly after the United States and Iran announced a framework agreement aimed at ending months of conflict, with plans to reopen the Strait of Hormuz following the formal signing of the deal.
Focus on strategic partnership
PM Modi and Sheikh Mohamed reviewed progress in key areas of cooperation, including trade, investment, technology, energy and defence. The discussions built on recent high-level engagements, including the UAE President’s visit to India earlier this year and PM Modi’s visit to the UAE in May.
The MEA noted that this was the third meeting between the two leaders in 2026, reflecting the growing depth of bilateral ties.
PM Modi also invited Sheikh Mohamed to attend the BRICS Summit, which India will host later this year.
Multiple bilateral meetings at G7
Apart from his meeting with the UAE President, PM Modi held separate interactions with leaders from South Korea, Egypt, Kenya and Japan.
Following his meeting with South Korean President Lee Jae-myung, PM Modi said India and South Korea are working closely in trade, commerce and emerging technologies.
He also met Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, reaffirming the strong and longstanding friendship between the two countries.
During talks with Kenyan President William Ruto, the Prime Minister highlighted the shared commitment of India and Kenya towards advancing the interests of the Global South.
PM Modi also interacted with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, with both leaders agreeing to further strengthen cooperation in trade, investment and other strategic sectors.
