The army says the Mushshak aircraft developed a technical fault during a routine training flight
Two Pakistan Army pilots were killed on Monday when their training aircraft crashed near Quetta, the capital of Balochistan province. The army said the crash was caused by a technical fault.
In a statement, the army said that around midday a Mushshak training aircraft of Pakistan Army Aviation went down near Nawan Killi, on the outskirts of Quetta. The pilots were Major Husnain Shehzad Humayun, the instructor, and Captain Abdul Samad, a student pilot. Both died in what the army called an “unfortunate crash.”
Local reports said the aircraft had taken off from the Quetta Cantonment airbase on a routine training flight before developing the fault. Security personnel reached the site and cordoned off the area.
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed grief over the deaths. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also conveyed his sorrow. President Zardari offered condolences to the families of the pilots.
Not the first this year
The crash follows other military aviation accidents in June. A Pakistan Army Mi-17 helicopter crashed near Muzaffarabad in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir during take-off, killing everyone on board, which the army also blamed on a technical fault. In the same month, a Pakistan Air Force aircraft crashed in Mardan during a routine training sortie, killing both pilots.
