A French woman was gang-raped in Pakistan’s Lahore in front of her two children after her car broke down near a highway on September 11th[1]. The woman had called police when her car broke down, as she waited for help, at least two men broke the windows of her car, dragged her and her two children out of the vehicle, and attacked and raped her multiple times in front of the children. They then robbed her too.
There have been outrage and demonstrations in many parts of Pakistani cities against the ghastly rape, demanding the government to arrest the culprits and give them illustrative punishment[2]. Maybe the rapists will be arrested soon.
What will happen then?
Nothing. Pakistan follows Hudood laws (Islamic laws stating the limits ordained by Allah and including the deterrent punishments for serious crimes) on rape. If the woman is not able to produce four male Muslim witnesses who saw her being raped, all the accused will be freed and she will be tried for illicit sexual relations which she admitted by rape accusations. This is as per Quran verses 4.15 and 24.4.
May be France will be able to pressurize Pakistan and fly her out of Pakistan to save her. But the women of Pakistan are not so lucky.
