In remembrance of Sahibzades, sons of Guru Nanak Dev, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took part in the ‘Veer Bal Diwas’ program organized at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi.

Prime Minister Modi participated in a ‘Shabad Kirtan‘ performed by 300 ‘Baal Kirtanis‘ approximately. He is also scheduled to flag off a march-past led by 3,000 children.

PM Modi hailed the supreme sacrifice of Sahibzades Zorawar Singh and Fateh Singh who were martyred at the tender ages of six and nine in Sirhind (Punjab) by Mughal forces on the orders of the then-ruler Aurangzeb.

While addressing the event, PM Modi said, “Sahibzades are inspiring generations. A country that has such history should be filled with confidence but unfortunately, in the name of history, we were taught only certain narratives which leads to an inferiority complex. On the one hand, there was terrorism & on the other, there was spiritualism, on the one hand, there was communal mayhem while on the other hand there was liberalism…on one hand, there were forces of lakhs while on the other there was Veer Sahibzade who didn’t relent at all.”

He further said that the Sikh Guru tradition is not only a tradition of faith and spirituality, but it is also a source of inspiration for the idea of ‘Ek Bharat-Shreshtha Bharat‘. He then paid his tribute to the martyred sons of Guru Gobind who sacrificed their lives for the country.

On this historic occasion, the Centre has organized an interactive and participative program all over the country to inform and educate the citizens, especially young children, about the story of the exemplary courage of the Sahibzades.

Earlier, Prime Minister tweeted, “On Veer Baal Diwas, we recall the courage of the Sahibzades and Mata Gujri Ji. We also remember the courage of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji”.

Essay writing, quiz competitions, and other activities have been organized in schools and colleges across the country to mark the day. Digital exhibitions have also been set up at public places like railway stations, petrol pumps, and airports, among others. Programs have been organized across the country where dignitaries will narrate the life story and sacrifice of the Sahibzades.

Earlier this year, the Prime Minister had declared that 26th December shall, henceforth, be marked as “Veer Bal Diwas” to pay homage to the courage of the “Sahibzades”, four sons of Guru Gobind Singh, the last Sikh guru.

While all four were martyred, the date has been chosen as it was the day observed as the martyrdom day of the Sahibzades Zorawar Singh and Fateh Singh, who were killed at the tender age of six and nine in Sirhind (Punjab) by Mughal forces.
