Massive protest in New York against violence on Hindus in Bangladesh
The violence that was incited during the Durga Puja festival in Bangladesh saw a massive protest in Bangladesh followed by protests across different countries.
Protests are currently underway across the globe, against the brutal attacks on the Hindu community in Bangladesh. There was a major protest in the United States’ New York against the violence against minorities.
Members of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) on Saturday staged protests by chanting the ‘Hare Krishna‘ mantra at their international headquarters in West Bengal’s Mayapur and 149 temples across the globe against the recent attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh.
Speaking to India Today, Radharam Das of ISKCON said, “From Tokyo to Toronto, we are conducting prayers and protests about whatever happened in Bangladesh. We hope the Bangladeshi government should take strict steps.
Communal tensions have risen as the minority Hindus celebrate their largest religious festival, the Durga Puja. About 8% of Bangladesh’s 160 million are Hindu.
Last week, many Durga Puja pavilions and Hindu temples, and homes across Bangladesh were attacked and vandalized, including an ISKCON center in Noakhali, and several people killed in violence that erupted over alleged blasphemy at a marquee in Comilla.
Though there have been several attacks on religious minorities in the past, community leaders say this is the worst large-scale mob violence against the community in the country’s history.
