TMC MLA Hamidur Rehman intimidates voters ahead of polls, hints at ‘Khela’ of violence in Bengal

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Hamidur Rehman in West Bengal has stirred controversy by threatening the local voters and raising concerns about the state’s electoral dynamics.

Hamidur Rehman warned that if votes weren’t cast in favour of the TMC, individuals should not expect protection once the central forces withdrew from the district on April 26.

The TMC MLA’s statement has ignited concerns about voter intimidation and the fair conduct of elections in the region.

While addressing an election rally in Chopra, North Dinajpur, Rehman issued a veiled threat to supporters of opposition parties.

Additionally, Rehman challenged the opposition parties to enumerate their development initiatives in the district, suggesting that without tangible achievements, voters should refrain from supporting their candidates.

“The supporters of the BJP, Congress, and the CPI(M) are eagerly awaiting polling day in North Dinajpur. However, I wish to convey that the central forces will only be present until April 26. After that, our force, a veiled reference to the state police, will take charge. I urge supporters of the Opposition parties not to waste their votes on the BJP, Congress, and CPI(M) candidates. Once the central forces leave, they shouldn’t complain if anything were to happen to them,” Rehman cautioned.

Rehman’s assertion that opposition supporters would be vulnerable once the central forces departed has sparked fears of reprisals and coercion to influence voting patterns. Hamidur Rehman subtly reminded voters about the TMC’s Khela of violence during the 2021 Vidhan Sabha elections and the 2023 Panchayat polls.

  1. The fellow is only making a statement that central forces will not be there for ever. It is only in the exercise of his right to freedom of speech. If the statement leads directly to physical violence then the question of action will arise. Then we have the judiciary. After all the judges are not appointed by anybody but the judges appoint themselves, what more unbiased arrangement can there be?
