BHU launches MA in Hindu studies course

The Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in Varanasi has started a new course – Masters in Hindu Studies. A total of 45 students, including a foreign student, have joined the first batch.

BHU rector V K Shukla inaugurated the course and said it is an interdisciplinary programme designed in line with the National Education Policy, 2020.

The first week’s timetable comprises lectures on Evolution of Hindu Dharma, What is Hindu Studies, The Antiquity and the Meaning of the Term Hindu, Indian Epistemology and Metaphysics, Hindu of Foreign Origin and Hinduism, and Brahmanism.

According to a BHU spokesperson, the postgraduate course is the first-of-its-kind to be offered by a university in the country. He said it is an interdisciplinary programme designed in line with the National Education Policy, 2020.

The programme will be offered by the Bharat Adhyayan Kendra, in collaboration with the Department of Philosophy and Religion, Department of Sanskrit, and Department of Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology, under the faculty of Arts.

The course will make the world aware of many unknown aspects of Hindu Dharma and help in taking its teachings to more people, said Prof V K Shukla, a senior rector.

Centenary Chair Professor Rakesh Upadhyaya said the course was important for building the ‘Sanatan‘ life values.

Anyone from any discipline arts, science, IT, technology who holds a graduation degree can take admissions to the BHU Hindu Studies MA course of two years. The MA course will comprise 4 semesters and 16 papers out of which 9 are compulsory and 7 are elective.

  1. Excellent thinking….. need to ensure that such courses can also lead to jobs & graduating students can earn a living, else, there will be untold problems !!

    Modern courses gives job & daily earning. Learning on religion & philosophy can only be an evangelists (needs sponsorship to earn money)……

    Education thinkers to think on monetary aspect to all those graduating from such courses.
