Madurai airport to boost international connectivity

The Union Cabinet of India has approved two major decisions aimed at improving connectivity and strengthening rural water infrastructure.

Briefing the media after the meeting, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the Cabinet has granted international status to Madurai Airport in Tamil Nadu and approved the extension of the Jal Jeevan Mission until December 2028.

Madurai airport to become international airport

The Cabinet cleared a proposal to grant international status to Madurai Airport, located in Madurai.

One of the oldest airports in Tamil Nadu, the facility serves as a key gateway for travellers visiting southern parts of the state.

According to the government, upgrading the airport will enhance international connectivity, making travel easier for passengers heading to the region.

Officials said the move is expected to boost tourism, pilgrimage travel, and trade, as Madurai is a prominent cultural and religious destination known for the Meenakshi Amman Temple.

Improved international connectivity could also attract more overseas pilgrims, tourists, and business travellers, supporting the region’s economic growth.

Jal Jeevan mission extended till 2028

The Cabinet also approved the extension of the Jal Jeevan Mission until December 2028, with an enhanced financial outlay.

The programme will now move into its next phase, often referred to as JJM 2.0, with a stronger emphasis on structural reforms in the rural drinking water sector.

The mission aims to strengthen sustainable drinking water supply systems in villages while improving service delivery and long-term infrastructure.

The government said the extended programme will continue efforts to ensure safe and reliable tap water connections for rural households across India, expanding the reach of clean drinking water facilities in villages.
