Calcutta HC takes up Kolkata’s RG Kar hospital vandalism matters, questions police’s role and response
The Calcutta High Court delivered a scathing critique of the Kolkata Police‘s handling of the recent ransacking of the emergency department at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital. During a hearing on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) addressing the vandalism, the Division Bench of Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharyya questioned the police’s role and response.
Chief Justice Sivagnanam expressed disbelief over the police’s apparent lack of awareness about a large gathering of approximately 7,000 people.
“What is happening? The police keep a close watch on situations with even a small crowd. How did they miss a gathering of 7,000 individuals? This is simply unbelievable,” the Chief Justice remarked.
The court also challenged the state government’s counsel on whether the administration had considered the necessity of imposing Section 144 in the area to prevent such incidents.
The high court’s stern observations highlight serious concerns about law enforcement’s effectiveness and preparedness in managing large-scale disturbances.
“There was such a major event where the representatives of the medical fraternity were protesting. What is the state government doing? The police could not protect their men. This is a total failure of the state administration,” the Chief Justice observed.
During the hearing, there was a demand for Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) within the RG Kar premises considering that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is conducting a court-monitored probe into the ghastly rape and murder of a woman doctor in the hospital premises last week.
On Friday, the controversial former RG Kar principal Dr Sandip Ghosh approached the Calcutta High Court seeking police protection.
Directing the counsel of Dr Ghosh to file a proper petition in the matter, the court advised him to stay at home.

The courts are getting more and more into the business of Slamming, Questioning, Commenting and Observing in stead of giving orders. If the the courts are so anguished, upset and concerned, can they not sue-moto prosecute the CP and the connected policemen as accomplices to the rape and murder. Do it once and never again will the police play this game for any gains including financial. The Babu and Politician nexus is the worst cocktail and when the judiciary makes no serious attempt to break it, it fails the people. With the ultimate power given by the constitution and even usurped some at times, people do expect the action now from the Judiciary to set things right, in stead of just being self-serving by standers.
