Defence Acquisition Council approves advanced systems for Indian Army and Coast Guard

In a meeting chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday, the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) greenlighted the acquisition of critical equipment for the Indian Army and the Coast Guard.

The council approved the procurement of an Advanced Land Navigation System for the Indian Army’s Armoured Fighting Vehicles and 22 Interceptor Boats with the latest state-of-art system for the Coast Guard.

This equipment will be procured from Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Chennai under the Buy {(Indian-Indigenously Designed Developed and Manufactured (lDDM)} category.

The Advanced Land Navigation System (ALNS Mk-II)

  1. ALNS Mk-II is designed with spoof-proof features and high-level encryption.
  2. It is compatible with the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS/NavIC), as well as Global Positioning System (GPS) and Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS).
  3. ALNS Mk-II offers compatibility with Defence Series Maps resulting in very high accuracy in navigational applications for AFVs.

Interceptor Boats

  1. The latest state-of-art Interceptor Boats will enhance the capabilities of the Indian Coast Guard.
  2. Interceptor boats are capable of quick interception and shallow water operation in territorial waters.
  3. These boats will be used for coastal surveillance and patrolling, search and rescue operations, including medical evacuation.

While Bengaluru-based Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) has a strong order book of Rs.75,934 crore, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) holds Rs.38,561 crore in orders and is set to advance technologically with a new agreement for GE engines. Larsen & Toubro (L&T) boasts an impressive Rs.94,000 crore in orders.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative has driven Indigenous defence production to a record Rs.1.27 lakh crore for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2024. Defence exports have surpassed Rs.21,000 crore. This push towards self-reliance is evident in the growing order books of Indian defence manufacturers, signaling a positive future for the sector.
