China reports the biggest surge of Covid cases in 2 years

As daily Covid cases see a massive surge in China, it has imposed a lockdown on 9 million of its residents in the northeastern industrial center of Changchun amid the new virus outbreak. Changchun is the capital of Jilin province and an important industrial base.

For the first time in two years, China’s daily Covid cases are over 10,000 as the highly contagious Omicron variant has triggered outbreaks on a scale only seen during the Wuhan outbreak.

Changchun has closed all non-essential businesses and transport links have also been suspended.

Orders have been issued to the residents to work from home. The residents cannot leave their homes for reasons not specified and they have to undergo three rounds of mass testing.

Several Chinese cities have been recording a surge in cases. Recently, Shanghai ordered its schools to close and shift to online instruction. The authorities have already imposed a partial lockdown in Jilin city. Just before the lockdown was imposed, the national authorities reported a spike in locally-transmitted cases of COVID-19 across the country.
