Shashi Tharoor was discharged by trial court on August 18
Delhi Police on November 15 appealed to Delhi High Court against the discharge of Congress MP Shashi Tharoor by the trial court from the mysterious death of his wife Sunanda Pushkar. Tharoor was discharged by the trial court on August 18 from the charges of abetment to suicide, domestic violence, and later added up charges for murder.
Sunanda was found dead in Hotel Leela in Delhi on January 17, 2014, when Shashi Tharoor was a minister. Before death, they were engaged in bitter battles and physical fights. The discharge order cited 15 injuries on her body, which was reported in the postmortem report on All India Institute Medical Science (AIIMS). She was found dead on the day within hours after she declared that she is going to the media to expose IPL Cricket frauds and betting related to her husband Tharoor. As per Police findings, she even called four noted journalists to give interviews.[1]
But somehow all the cricket administering politicians were united to save Tharoor. It was BJP leader Subramanian Swamy who exposed that she was injected poison which was declared by AIIMS. First Delhi Police registered First Information Report (FIR) in January 2015 (after one year of death) without naming anyone and Shashi Tharoor was questioned thrice.
But BJP Government also hushed up the probe and Subramanian Swamy appealed to Delhi High Court. Even after the AIIMS post-mortem report, Delhi Police preferred to send testing in US FBI lab also (three years after death). AIIMS report even described the tricks of Shashi Tharoor to fool them.[2]
But High Court Judge Justice Muralidhar rejected Swamy’s petition through a bad judgment terming the petition as politically motivated. But Supreme Court Bench headed by Justice Arun Mishra issued notice to Delhi Police on Swamy’s appeal.
After getting notice from Supreme Court, Delhi Police filed a charge sheet against Shashi Tharoor in mid-2018 in a diluted way. The charges were only on abetment to suicide and domestic violence. Later during the argument, Delhi Police demanded adding charges for murder in November 2019. In 176-page discharge order, the trial judge questioned the abetment to suicide angle and also spoke in detail about the 15 injury marks in Sunanda’s body. But however, the trial Judge referred to discharge the diluted charge sheet filed by Delhi Police.[3]
