A fresh FIR was registered against Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Friday over remarks made during a political speech in March 2026.

The case stems from a complaint filed by a Kolkata resident, who alleged that statements made by Banerjee during a public rally could promote communal disharmony and create unrest among different communities. Based on the complaint, Kolkata Police registered an FIR after it was submitted at Hare Street Police Station.

According to the complainant, Banerjee had warned during a political gathering that if a particular community voted in a certain manner, it could have adverse consequences for others. The complainant alleged that such remarks were capable of creating fear, misunderstanding and tension among citizens.

The complaint was originally submitted by Tushar Kanti Das at Netaji Nagar Police Station in South Kolkata on May 20. He claimed that while cautioning voters against what Banerjee described as the Bharatiya Janata Party‘s “misleading publicity“, she made comments that could be interpreted as generating apprehension and insecurity among sections of the population.

The complainant further alleged that the statement was vague in its reference to a community and had the potential to disturb communal harmony in the state.

This is not the first legal complaint filed against the Trinamool Congress leader in recent months. In May this year, another FIR was registered against Banerjee following a complaint alleging that certain remarks had hurt religious sentiments.

That complaint was filed at the Siliguri Cyber Crime Police Station by advocate Rinki Chattopadhyay Singh. She alleged that police initially refused to register the case and did so only after repeated follow-ups.

According to the complaint, two separate remarks made by Banerjee — one during a religious event in 2025 and another during a protest gathering at Dharmatala ahead of the Assembly elections — had hurt the sentiments of Sanatani Hindus.

The complaint also referred to a statement allegedly made by Banerjee during the 2026 Assembly election campaign, suggesting that if a particular community attacked Hindus, they would face severe consequences.

Advocate Singh alleged that such remarks were intended to influence voters through fear and intimidation and could contribute to social unrest and communal disharmony.

Police registered the earlier FIR under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including sections related to criminal intimidation and intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of peace.
