ATS nabs main handler of AQIS-linked terror module
The Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has arrested Shama Parveen, a 30-year-old woman believed to be the central figure in a terror module linked to Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS). Parveen was taken into custody from Bengaluru, Karnataka, in a significant breakthrough for Indian security agencies.
According to intelligence sources, Parveen played a pivotal role in managing and coordinating the terror network’s operations from Karnataka. She is alleged to have directed the module’s activities and acted as the primary handler.
Earlier arrests reveal wider terror plot
Parveen’s arrest comes shortly after four suspected terrorists were apprehended on July 23 from various locations, including Gujarat, Delhi, and Noida. The suspects, aged between 20 and 25, were identified as Mohd Fardeen, Sefullah Kureshi, Zeeshan Ali, and Mohd Faiq.
Investigators say the four individuals maintained contact through a social media platform and had reportedly been assigned targets of national significance across India. The group’s plans allegedly included coordinated attacks on prominent locations, raising alarms about potential threats to internal security.
Cross-border links and foreign handlers suspected
Authorities believe that the group was in communication with handlers based outside India, suggesting a broader network of coordination with international terror outfits. The ATS and other national agencies are currently verifying cross-border linkages and operational strategies facilitated by external entities.
UN report warns of expanding AQIS presence
A recent report from the United Nations has reinforced concerns regarding AQIS activities in the region. The 32nd report from the Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team under the UN Security Council’s 1267 Sanctions Committee states that AQIS, under its emir Osama Mehmood, is actively expanding its presence.
The report highlights AQIS’s intention to strengthen operations across Jammu and Kashmir, Bangladesh, and Myanmar, further underlining the urgency of heightened vigilance and counter-terror operations in South Asia.
