Incident adds to a documented pattern of temple vandalism across North America and Australia in recent years

A Hindu temple in Richmond Heights, Ohio, was attacked with bricks on Friday afternoon, shattering windows and causing significant damage while priests and devotees were present inside, according to the Hindu American Foundation (HAF).

The Shree Swaminarayan Vadtal Dham Hindu Mandir, located in the Greater Cleveland area, was targeted at around 1:30 pm, with one or more perpetrators throwing bricks at the building. “Hindu temple attacked in Ohio today. At 1:30 PM today, the Shree Swaminarayan Vadtal Dham Hindu Mandir in Richmond Heights, Ohio was attacked by perpetrator(s) who threw bricks at the temple, causing significant damage,” HAF said in a post on X.

    Investigation underway

HAF said surveillance footage of the incident was available and was being reviewed by authorities, and that the organisation was in touch with temple leadership and offering assistance. The Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA) separately confirmed that priests and devotees were inside the temple at the time of the attack, which shattered windows.

    Timing adds to the concern

The attack came just as Ohio’s Hindu community had begun celebrations marking Hindu Heritage Month, with Navratri observances also approaching, adding to the sense of alarm within the local community. HAF called on elected officials and government agencies to “publicly and unequivocally condemn hateful rhetoric against Indian and Hindu American communities,” and the incident is being investigated as a potential hate crime.

    Part of a recurring pattern

CoHNA has repeatedly flagged a pattern of rising hostility and vandalism targeting Hindu temples across North America and Australia in recent years. Previous incidents include attacks and graffiti at BAPS Swaminarayan temples in Sacramento, New York, Newark and Chino Hills, California, vandalism at the Hindu Sabha Mandir in Brampton, Canada, and defacement of temples in Melbourne and Brisbane, Australia. Several of these earlier incidents were linked by Hindu advocacy groups to pro-Khalistan messaging, though no such connection has yet been established in Friday’s Ohio attack.

The motive behind Friday’s attack and the identity of those responsible have not yet been determined, and the investigation remains ongoing.
