A Delhi trial court on Wednesday issued summons to former Union minister P Chidambaram and his son Karti in the INX Media money-laundering case after taking cognizance of the charge sheet filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Special Judge M K Nagpal issued summons against the senior Congress leader, his son, and others directing them to appear before the court on April 7. Besides the Chidambaram’s, the charge sheet names family’s chartered accountant S S Bhaskararaman among others.
Chidambaram was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the INX Media corruption case on August 21, 2019. On October 16, 2019, the ED arrested him in a related money-laundering case. Six days later, on October 22, the apex court granted bail to Chidambaram in the case lodged by the CBI. In the ED case, he got bail on December 4, 2019. The Supreme Court bench that granted bail was headed by Ruth Bhanumathi.
In the INX Media case, CBI has charge-sheeted former Finance Ministry officials such as Sindhushree Khullar, Anoop Poojari, Prabodh Saxena, P K Bagga, Rabindra Prasad and Ajith Kumar Dungdung along with Chidambaram and son Karti.
CBI case in INX Media
The CBI had registered its case on May 15, 2017, alleging irregularities in a Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance granted to the INX Media group for receiving overseas funds of Rs.305 crore in 2007, during Chidambaram’s tenure as finance minister. Subsequently, the ED had lodged the money-laundering case. Actually, FIPB first gave clearance for Rs.5 crore and INX Media promoters Indrani and Peter Mukherjea illegally brought Rs.305 crore and caught by Income Tax later in 2008. From escaping from Income Tax prosecution, Indrani and Peter who are also accused bribed around Rs.5 crore to Karti through his companies and obtained post-fact FIPB clearance for illegally brought Rs.305 crores. Indrani has become an Approver in the case.
ED has filed the charge sheet on June 3, 2020, in October 2018 and attached Rs.54 crore worth properties of Karti and his firms in Delhi, Ooty, London and Spain. In the INX Media case, CBI has charge-sheeted former Finance Ministry officials such as Sindhushree Khullar, Anoop Poojari, Prabodh Saxena, P K Bagga, Rabindra Prasad and Ajith Kumar Dungdung along with Chidambaram and son Karti. Other accused are INX promoters Indrani and Peter Mukherjea and Chidambaram family’s chartered accountant S S Bhaskararaman. Four companies including INX Media and Karti’s firms Chess Management Services Pvt Ltd and Advantage Strategic Consulting Pvt Ltd are also made as accused by CBI.
INX Media bribery case was unearthed by ED’s Joint Director Rajeshwar Singh in connection with a raid during the probe in the Aircel-Maxis scam at Karti’s home and companies. The joint raid by Income Tax and ED has also unearthed the Chidambaram family’s assets in 14 countries and 21 foreign bank accounts.
