The Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, Pushkar Singh Dhami has assured the safety of the residents in Joshimath amid the ongoing sinking of land and cracks that have developed in houses at several places in the area.
PMO to hold a high-level meeting on Joshimath situation
CM Dhami assured that Prime Minister’s office and state government is ‘closely monitoring the situation‘. Notably, Prime Minister’s Office will be holding a high-level meeting on the crisis.
Dhami added, “The study is going on in this matter. Prime Minister’s office is continuously taking information in this matter, before coming here, PM Narendra Modi has taken detailed information from me.”
Immediate evacuation of 600 families
Earlier, CM Dhami issued an order for an immediate evacuation of 600 families who were residing in the sinking town of Joshimath. “Our priority now is saving lives. Officials including SDRF and NDRF have been asked to shift around 600 families living in endangered houses in Joshimath to safe locations,” CM Dhami said.
On Saturday, Dhami arrived at Joshimath and conducted a ground inspection of land subsidence-affected areas and met affected families. He also did an aerial survey of the ‘sinking’ town.
ISRO roped in to deal with Joshimath sinking crisis
Dhami said, “We are also contemplating if people need to be migrated from here & rehabilitated. We are also finding out a location for this. As of now, this is the winter season. So, we are looking into the issues that need to be addressed immediately. Our effort is to make everyone safe. Preparations are made for necessary arrangements. Our first task is to take people to safer areas. Geoscientists working. There’s Guwahati institute, IIT Roorkee, and also in talks with ISRO. Everyone is finding out the causes.”
Joshimath case reached Supreme Court
Meanwhile, Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati, Shankaracharya of Jyotishpeeth in Uttarakhand has filed a PIL in the Supreme Court on Saturday through his advocate regarding the natural calamity in Joshimath.
The plea has been filed seeking direction to declare the current incidents of Joshimath land subsidence as a ‘national disaster‘ and to direct the National Disaster Management Authority to actively support the residents of Joshimath.
