Terror Strike Averted In Assam As Two ULFA(I) Cadres Nabbed
In a major counter-insurgency operation, Assam Police, acting on specific intelligence inputs and with support from central security agencies, arrested two suspected active members of the banned United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent), or ULFA(I), in Tinsukia district on Friday, officials said.
Police said the operation thwarted an alleged terror plot that could have targeted civilians in Upper Assam.
The arrested men have been identified as Siyor Asom alias Humenjyoti Baruah (27) and Manoj Asom alias Papu Moran (30). According to investigators, both allegedly held the rank of SS 2nd Lieutenant within the banned insurgent outfit.
During the operation, security personnel recovered a substantial cache of arms, ammunition and military-style equipment.
The seized items included two AK-56 assault rifles, 172 rounds of live ammunition, two hand grenades, medical supplies, syringes, opioid substances, jungle survival rations, backpacks and other equipment.
According to the preliminary investigation, the two suspects had allegedly been tasked by ULFA(I) with carrying out an indiscriminate attack on civilians in Tinsukia town with the objective of creating fear and panic among the public.
Investigators are also examining possible external links behind the alleged plot, with officials suspecting the operation may have been influenced by elements seeking to destabilise peace and security in the region.
Police have registered a case and initiated legal proceedings against the accused.
Officials said further investigation is underway to identify other operatives, trace logistical support networks and uncover the broader conspiracy behind the alleged terror plan.
The operation is being viewed as a significant success for security forces, with authorities believing it prevented what could have been a mass-casualty attack in Upper Assam.
