Cops identify Saif’s attacker as Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, a Bangladeshi national
Mumbai Police have arrested Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, a Bangladeshi national, for allegedly breaking into actor Saif Ali Khan’s Bandra home and stabbing him six times during a robbery attempt. The accused, who illegally entered India and had been living in Mumbai under the alias Bijoy Das, was apprehended from Thane.
Intruder’s background and arrest
Deputy Commissioner of Police Dixit Gedam confirmed that Shehzad had no valid Indian documents, suggesting he is from Bangladesh. Working for a housekeeping agency in Mumbai for four months, the suspect allegedly entered the actor’s home through a fire exit intending to commit robbery.
Recovered items and technical evidence link him to the crime. Charges under the Passport Act and other sections for illegal entry have been added to the case. Police are currently interrogating the accused.
The attack
The incident occurred late Wednesday night when the intruder was spotted by Eliyama Philip, the nanny for Saif Ali Khan’s children. She heard noises around 2 a.m. and found the bathroom door ajar. Spotting the intruder entering a child’s room, she confronted him, only to be attacked with a wooden stick and a hexa blade.
The man demanded Rs.1 crore in English, according to her statement. When Saif Ali Khan intervened, the attacker assaulted him, stabbing him six times before fleeing the scene. Kareena Kapoor Khan and others managed to secure themselves on the upper floor of the house. Saif was rushed to Lilavati Hospital, where doctors report he is recovering well.
Public outrage and government response
The attack has shocked Mumbai and sparked concerns over the city’s safety. Opposition leaders and members of the film industry have questioned the state government’s ability to maintain law and order. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis defended Mumbai’s safety record, stating, “Mumbai remains one of the safest cities in India. Isolated incidents like this should not tarnish its image. We are committed to making the city even safer.”
Investigation and security concerns
The incident raises serious questions about security for public figures and ordinary citizens alike. Police continue to investigate whether Shehzad had accomplices and are reviewing protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future.
As the city comes to terms with this high-profile crime, the focus remains on ensuring justice and improving safety measures for all residents.
