A large number of border residents have been spending sleepless nights for past several days due to the regular exchange of firing along the LoC.

Pakistan army on Sunday destroyed one of the forward Indian posts along the line of control in Bhimber Gali sector of Rajouri using Anti Tank Guided missile (ATGM) in which four Indian soldiers including a young army captain attained martyrdom.

The situation was tense in the region as the line of control was on the boil. Indian army too was retaliating strongly and effectively to inflict maximum damage on the Pakistani side of the line of control.

Confirming the fatal injuries Deputy Commissioner Rajouri Dr Shahid Iqbal Choudhary tweeted late Sunday evening,”One officer and three jawans martyred in Rajouri. Most areas affected due to ceasefire violation”.

Defence PRO in Jammu said, “martyrdom of Indian army soldiers will not go in vain.

According to ground reports firing continued till 3.30 p.m while small arms firing was going on intermittently till late evening.

The ‘unprovoked’ action by Pakistan army will be given a befitting response”. Defence PRO also confirmed heavy damage has been inflicted on Pakistan army posts in retaliatory fire.

The martyred soldiers have been identified as 23-year-old Capt Kapil Kundu, hailing from Village Ransika Tehsil Pataudi, District Gurgaon. He is survived by his mother Sunita Devi. He was to turn 23 on February 10.

Rifleman Ramavatar. He is survived by his wife Rachana Lodhi and hails from Village Baraka, Tehsil Gwalior.

23-year-old Rifleman Subham Singh from Village Mukand Pur Choudharian, Tehsil Marheen, District Kathua. He is survived by his father Parshotam Singh and Havilder Roshan Lal. He is survived by his wife Asha Devi. He hailed from Village Nicholas, Tehsil Ghagwal, District Samba.

Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti also tweeted to share her anger and pain. “Pained to hear that three soldiers were killed & two injured along the Line of Control in Rajouri. My condolences to the deceased’s families”. The total death toll in series of incidents of cross-border/LoC firing has risen to 18 with these four fatal injuries since January 17, 2018, in the state.

Meanwhile, a civilian and a BSF officer also received minor injuries during day-long incidents of ceasefire violations across Poonch and Bhimber Gali sectors.

According to ground reports, a young girl was injured in a fresh exchange of firing along the line of control in Shahpur area of Poonch.

Defence Spokesperson in Jammu said, ” Pakistan army initiated ‘unprovoked’ and indiscriminate firing of small arms, automatics, and mortars from 11.00 a.m in Poonch sector”.

According to ground reports firing continued till 3.30 p.m while small arms firing was going on intermittently till late evening.

The district authorities in the border belt are in a state of high alert and closely monitoring the situation

Following tense situation in the forward areas, DC Rajouri also ordered the closure of all educational institutions for next three days in the 0-5 km belt along the line of control from Sunderbani to Manjakote areas of Rajouri.

The local residents remained huddled inside their houses in the wake of fresh escalation. The district authorities in the border belt are in a state of high alert and closely monitoring the situation before evacuating them to safer places.
