Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday strongly condemned the shooting incident at an event attended by US President Donald Trump, asserting that violence has no place in democratic societies.

Reacting to the incident, PM Modi said he was relieved to learn that the US President and other top leaders were safe. In a post on X, he extended his wishes for their continued safety.

“Relieved to learn that President Trump, the First Lady and Vice President are safe and unharmed following the recent security incident at a Washington DC hotel. I extend my best wishes for their continued safety and well-being. Violence has no place in a democracy and must be unequivocally condemned,” he wrote.

The incident unfolded during the annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, where gunshots were reported at the venue. President Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and other senior officials were swiftly evacuated by security personnel.

    What Happened At The Event

Speaking after the incident, President Trump said a man approached a security checkpoint “armed with multiple weapons” before being neutralised by the Secret Service.

“He was taken down by some very brave members of the Secret Service,” Trump said, adding that the suspect fired at an officer who was protected by a bulletproof vest.

The US President described the attacker as a “sick person” and said the suspect had been arrested. He also indicated that authorities believe the assailant acted alone.

“You know, he charged from 50 yards away, so he was very far away from the room. He was moving. He was really moving,” Trump said.

The high-profile dinner, attended by members of the administration and media, was cancelled following the security scare. Officials are continuing investigations into the incident, which is being treated as a possible “lone wolf” attack.
