PM Modi’s Bhutan visit aims to cement India-Bhutan relations

On Friday, the King of Bhutan conferred the Order of the Druk Gyalpo on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Dedicating the award to 140 Cr Indians, PM Modi said, “This honour is not my personal achievement, it is the honour of India and 140 crore Indians. I humbly accept this honour on behalf of all Indians in this great land of Bhutan and thank you all from the bottom of my heart for this honour.”

As per ranking and precedence established, the Order of the Druk Gyalpo was instituted as the decoration for lifetime achievement and is the pinnacle of the honour system in Bhutan, taking precedence over all orders, decorations, and medals.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Bhutan for a two-day state visit and was warmly received by a ceremonial welcome by his counterpart, Tshering Tobgay, at Paro airport.

MoUs were exchanged between India and Bhutan during PM Modi’s visit to the country.

A group of Bhutanese youngsters dressed in traditional Indian attire performed a Garba song written by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to welcome him to their country.

PM Modi will be inaugurating the Gyaltsuen Jetsun Pema Mother and Child Hospital, a state-of-the-art hospital in Thimphu, built with the assistance of the Government of India.

PM Modi’s Bhutan visit is in keeping with the tradition of regular high-level exchanges between the countries, and India’s emphasis on its Neighbourhood First policy.

“The visit will provide an opportunity for both sides to exchange views on bilateral and regional matters of interest and deliberate on ways to expand and intensify our exemplary partnership between the two nations,” MEA had said earlier.
