PM Modi kicks off Indonesia visit with focus on strategic and economic ties
Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a ceremonial welcome in Jakarta on Monday as he began the Indonesia leg of his three-nation Indo-Pacific tour, with bilateral talks focusing on defence, trade, critical minerals, food security and maritime cooperation.
President Prabowo Subianto personally welcomed PM Modi, underlining the growing strategic partnership between the two countries. Earlier, the Prime Minister’s aircraft was escorted into Indonesian airspace by Indonesian Air Force F-16 and Sukhoi-30 fighter jets in a rare ceremonial gesture.
During the summit-level talks, the two leaders are expected to review the India-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and discuss ways to expand cooperation in defence, maritime security, trade, investment, health, pharmaceuticals, space, clean energy and critical minerals. Multiple agreements and Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) are expected to be signed during the visit.
Defence cooperation is likely to be a major focus of the visit, with discussions expected on Indonesia’s interest in acquiring the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile. Both sides are also expected to explore closer collaboration on maritime security and Indo-Pacific stability.
As part of his visit, PM Modi is also scheduled to travel to Yogyakarta, where he will visit the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Prambanan Temple and participate in initiatives highlighting the shared civilisational and cultural ties between India and Indonesia.
Indonesia is the first stop on PM Modi’s three-nation tour, which will also take him to Australia and New Zealand as India seeks to deepen strategic partnerships and strengthen its engagement across the Indo-Pacific region.
