The annual Jagannath Rath Yatra in Puri was marred by tragedy after a crowd surge led to deaths and multiple hospitalisations
A day of deep faith and celebration turned tragic in Odisha‘s temple town of Puri after a stampede-like situation during the Jagannath Rath Yatra left devotees dead and many others injured, casting a shadow over one of the world’s largest Hindu religious gatherings.
The incident occurred as lakhs of devotees gathered to witness the grand chariot procession of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra. According to officials, an unexpected crowd surge led to panic, with several people collapsing in the crush. Emergency teams rushed the injured to nearby hospitals, where many were treated for suffocation, exhaustion and injuries sustained during the chaos.
Authorities have confirmed fatalities, while the number of people requiring medical attention continued to rise as rescue teams responded to the emergency. Officials have launched an inquiry to determine the circumstances that led to the crowd surge despite elaborate security arrangements for the annual festival.
The Jagannath Rath Yatra is among the holiest festivals in the Hindu calendar, drawing devotees from across India and abroad. Every year, millions gather in Puri to witness the centuries-old tradition in which the deities are taken from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple in massive wooden chariots.

The tragedy has renewed concerns over crowd management at large religious gatherings. Despite extensive preparations, including additional security personnel, surveillance systems and traffic control measures, the sheer volume of pilgrims once again tested the limits of crowd control infrastructure.
As investigations continue, the focus has shifted to whether existing safety protocols were adequate and if additional measures could have prevented the tragedy. The incident serves as a sobering reminder that protecting devotees must remain as important as preserving the sanctity of India’s great religious traditions.
