Russia shows signs of de-escalation
On Tuesday Russia has confirmed that it was pulling back some of its forces near the Ukraine border to their bases.
In its statement, Russia’s defence ministry said it was withdrawing some of the troops conducting exercises in military districts bordering Ukraine.
This could be the first major step towards de-escalation after weeks of tension with the West.
Although Russia hasn’t confirmed the number of troops that it has pulled back how many units were being withdrawn, and how far, after a build-up of some 130,000 Russian troops to the north, east, and south of Ukraine.
NATO’s chief welcomed signals from Russia. Nato was looking for a diplomatic solution and had urged Moscow to demonstrate its will to act.
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said, “There are signs from Moscow that diplomacy should continue. This gives grounds for cautious optimism.”
Russian markets reacted positively to the news and the rouble, which has been under pressure due to fears of fresh Western sanctions in the event of a war, gained 1.5% shortly after the defence ministry announcement.
