After outrage SBI withdraws circular for pregnant women recruitment

State Bank of India (SBI) has withdrawn its circular that prevented women over 3 months pregnant from joining their services after facing backlash from all corners. The development comes after the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) issued a notice to the SBI.

The DCW’s notice stated that it has taken suo-moto cognizance of the new guidelines and demanded the cancellation of the same. The notice further noted that the guideline discriminated against people on the basis of gender, which was a violation of a fundamental right.

In view of the public sentiments, the country’s largest bank took the decision to keep the revised instructions regarding the recruitment of pregnant women candidates in abeyance and continue with the existing instructions in the matter.

Swati Maliwal, Chairperson for the Delhi Commission for Women tweeted, “State Bank of India seems to have issued guidelines preventing women who are over 3 months pregnant from joining service & have termed them as ‘temporarily unfit’. This is both discriminatory and illegal. We have issued a Notice to them seeking withdrawal of this anti women rule.”

The State Bank Of India issued a press release through its official handle, “Press release relating to news items about required fitness standards for recruitment in bank. Revised instructions about recruitment of Pregnant Women candidates stands withdrawn.”

The internet had exploded with outrage on what it called “discriminatory” rules on part of the SBI, as netizens took to their respective social media handles to request the country’s largest lender to revoke its revised guidelines.
